"Hi... I'm Oates."
The Oates Pool
Because having a baby isn't really all that fun -- until your friends start wagering!
THE POOL IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED!
BECAUSE WE NOW HAVE A HEALTHY NEWBORN SON!
WE'LL TABULATE RESULTS AS SOON AS WE CAN -- STAY TUNED...
Well, we're getting closer and closer to that fateful day on which we'll be welcoming a new person into our lives. There's still quite a bit of uncertainty in the air, as we don't know much about the kid we'll be having. Here's what we do know thus far:
We're only having one this time around. No twins, triplets or other multiples.
Theoretically, the baby is "due" at the end of January.
Whatever it is, it sure kicks an awful lot.
Hence, to exploit the principle of uncertainty, we present The Oates Pool. Below are a couple of questions about the kid -- when s/he will be born, what his/her measurements will be, and if s/he will be a her/him, or a him/her. You get the idea.
We've assigned point values next to each of the questions below, so be sure to fill out every single one of them. That way, you're not immediately out of the running just because you don't have the correct gender. A perfect score is 100 points; whoever gets closest to that wins. In case of a tie, we have included a timely tie-breaker question at the end. Be sure to fill this out as well, as you may be in the running with someone else at the same point value.
To sweeten the pot a bit -- we'll be offering a grand prize to the person who rakes up the most points in the pool! The prize is -- yes, you guessed correctly -- tickets to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and a lovely UUNET/Worldcom baseball cap! (As you can see, we're on a pretty tight budget here...)
As always, the normal rules apply: You must submit a valid email address, only one submission per person, void where prohibited, etc. etc. etc. If you'd rather use metric measurements, please remember that this is neither modern-day Canada nor the USA in the late '70s. Please learn the system that we stole and then distorted from England.
We'll do our best to update this page regularly with people's entries. To keep things fair, we'll be entering all submissions by hand, so please be patient.
And, as always, feel free to leave any comments/feedback for us...

Please email us with any further questions -- and we'll be happy to answer them.
